How Technology Could Transform Christmas for Your Residents

The festive season is often seen as a time for family and community spirit, but for care home residents it can be much more difficult to get involved with the festive fun, especially when friends and family are not nearby.

Fortunately for care home managers who want to offer the best possible quality of life to their residents, technological innovations are beginning to represent effective solutions to communication problems. With the use of computers, smartphones, smart TVs, and various pieces of clever software, care homes can help to ensure that their residents have the chance to spend time with loved ones both near, and far, this Christmas.

Embracing technology in your care home

Within the care home environment, residents may be receiving highly specialised care, not to mention having access to bespoke equipment to help them get around. While the useful resources found within a care home can do a lot to promote good quality of life for residents, they also mean that it's often impractical for these individuals to be away from the care home for long periods of time, such as over the Christmas period.

However, care homes that are willing to install modern technology into their facilities can provide residents with another opportunity for getting in touch with loved ones at these important times of year. For example:

  • Through a computer: Residents can use computers and laptops with the assistance of care home staff to communicate with family and friends through video calls on programmes like Skype. These programmes are completely free, and often quite simple to use - perfect for that early morning call to wish your loved ones "Merry Christmas".
  • Through a Smart TV: Like computers, some smart televisions can be set up to allow for video calls and conferences, so that your residents can see their family on the big screen – wherever they are in the world!
  • Through smartphones: Finally, smartphones with forward-facing cameras can allow for easy FaceTime or Skype conversations, wherein residents can interact with their loved ones at Christmas from the comfort of their favourite chair.

The true value of technology

Most care homes already use technology in a number of different ways - from dynamic beds to patient hoists. Although communication technology might not help to get your residents from place to place, it can help them to improve their emotional wellbeing by ensuring they have the chance to interact with the people they care about when an in-person visit isn’t possible or practical.

Even something as simple as being able to set up a social media account and check the latest photos of new grandchildren, or speak to family for free through instant messaging, could be enough to put the sparkle back into your residents' festive season.

Will you be introducing new technology to your care home this Christmas to make it easier for your residents to keep in touch with their loved ones? Or if you have already installed exciting new technology, how are your residents using it? We’d love to hear from you – leave us a comment below, or send us a tweet @CareShopBunzl.
